26. The Reason Your Sin Bothers You Is Because It's Not Who You Are

It's taught in churches everywhere that when a Christian sins, the Holy Spirit is there to convict them of that sin. Now, while it might be true that we do become sensitive to the sinful things we do, it's not because the Holy Spirit is convicting us of sin. The Holy Spirit convicts us (convinces us) of righteousness, because that's what we are!  We have become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. (2 Cor 5:21)

And so the reason we feel bad when we sin isn't because God is trying to make us feel bad, but because at the core of who we are (again, we are the righteousness of God), we know that sin is not who we are, and we know that what we've done isn't a true expression of who are truly are.  There is never meant to be any guilt or condemnation that goes along with our sinful behavior.  We are meant, instead, to simply look again to Christ Himself, who is our life and our righteousness.
