26. The Reason Your Sin Bothers You Is Because It's Not Who You Are

It's taught in churches everywhere that when a Christian sins, the Holy Spirit is there to convict them of that sin. Now, while it might be true that we do become sensitive to the sinful things we do, it's not because the Holy Spirit is convicting us of sin. The Holy Spirit convicts us (convinces us) of righteousness, because that's what we are!  We have become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. (2 Cor 5:21)

And so the reason we feel bad when we sin isn't because God is trying to make us feel bad, but because at the core of who we are (again, we are the righteousness of God), we know that sin is not who we are, and we know that what we've done isn't a true expression of who are truly are.  There is never meant to be any guilt or condemnation that goes along with our sinful behavior.  We are meant, instead, to simply look again to Christ Himself, who is our life and our righteousness.

11. There Is No Record Against You

One of the weights that many people carry around is guilt and condemnation, and the thought that God is keeping score with their sins. It's a trap that's easily fallen into, thinking that the things we've done are keeping us separated from God. The good news is that God has taken away our sins - and He's even taken away the scoreboard that kept track of them!

4. No Room for Judging Others

How many people use God's law, or some other arbitrary list of rules of right and wrong, to judge and condemn other people? It's all too common, unfortunately, and this can be especially true in the church! But our job isn't to point fingers at each other. Any list of rules or laws should really show us that we have ALL fallen short, and therefore there is no room for judging others. And then we have the joy and privilege of sharing the good news of God's free gift of righteousness!
